A three hour workshop on April 22nd, [Earth Day] entitled Unlocking Nature’s Secrets: An Introduction to Botanical Contact Printing.
1. the Secrets of the Humble Onion Skin …
- printing a silk scarf with onion skins
- making onion skin dye and shibori-dyeing a silk scarf
2. Printing with Iron
- printing a piece of silk noil or linen [or samples] with leaves, using an iron mordant. This piece/set of samples could be stitched into to make a cushion cover or pictures.
BEFORE THE WORKSHOP
You would need to prepare your fabric [instructions will be given] and collect skins from 6-8 onions. I tend to use rusty tools soaked in water for a few weeks to make the iron water and there is time to do this.
Requirements [Maggie will send full list, including]
- one or two silk scarves [depending on how many pieces we decide to make] [Maggie can supply or provide details of suppliers]
- half a yard of light coloured or white linen [or cotton] [Maggie can supply or provide details of suppliers, but something from your stash will do fine]
- small amount washing soda or soda ash for scouring linen or cotton
- 5gm ferrous sulphate [Maggie can supply or provide details of suppliers]
- a pan at least 12″ diameter and 5″ deep [ideally an old steamer!]
- two wooden poles or metal pipes, at least 3/4″ diameter, to fit inside pot
- elastic bands [brown]
- string/T shirt yarn/strips of old sheet or crepe bandage to bind bundles with
